Summer Special Nights

Our club’s once-a-month “Summer Specials” began
in May last year. All club age-groups participated together, with
parents invited, and most events took place in the time slot of
a regular club meeting.
May–Mini Racecar Derby. The adults and kids
made race car tracks out of bits and pieces of material gathered
(with permission) from building sites--lumber, vinyl siding, cardboard,
and so on. And lots of duct tape! This was a hoot! It began as girls
vs. boys, but they soon mixed well. The adults really got into it!
And as the evening wore on, they were hard to stop. They were getting
extremely creative with their tracks. Meanwhile the kids were spending
most of their time eating ice cream and racing their cars and jumping
on foam mats. It was a hit and I sure would do it again in a flash.
(Next time I would have some tracks prepared ahead of time so the
kids could get into racing right away while the adults went off
on their creativity trip.)
June--Kite-Hike-Bike Night. We started with flying
kites in a neighbourhood park. Then we hiked or biked some riverside
trails. We stopped under a bridge and had an object lesson (about
old sneakers--from Pioneer Clubs’ Talks That Teach
book). The hour and a half flew by for the 12 of us.
July--Swim and Picnic. This took place at the
same park. The evening ended with a devotional time.
