1. Clay creations (do both)
Make a coil pot or a slab tray.
You will need: for both: self-hardening clay (from art store), water; for slab tray: tray or shallow bowl, fork, rolling pin; optional: paintbrushes, oil-based paint, shellac, turpentine
Coil pot
Roll clay into long coils of uniform thickness. Wrap coils around each other to form the pot, joining them with slip. Make slip by mixing a small lump of clay with water until it is like paste. Smooth coils with damp fingers as pot builds in height. Let pot air dry for several days. Paint and shellac it if you wish.
Slab tray
Roll out a piece of clay until it is uniformly flat. Clay should be at least 1/4 in. (.5 cm) thick. Place slab in a tray or bowl, and gently press in to form. Make a pattern using a fork or other modeling instrument. Let tray air dry for several days. Paint and shellac if you wish.
Read Isaiah 64:8.
How are we like clay?
2. Paint projects (choose one)
Watercolor landscape
You will need: watercolor paper, pencil, watercolor paints, water, soft brush, masking tape
Make a very light drawing of an outdoor scene with few details. Wet the paper with a brush and water. Tape paper down to surface. Gently paint the sky and ground, letting the colors run into each other. When the paper is dry, paint in details.
Tempera-paint cityscape
You will need: colored or white paper, tempera paints, small paint rollers, paintbrush
Paint the sky across the top of the paper with a roller that’s almost dry. Roll stripes of different colors from the bottom of the page up to form buildings. Add clouds with light roller touches. Use a different roller for each color, or wash and dry roller between color changes. Add a few details with a brush.
Stencil picture
You will need: drawing paper, stencil paper, stencil brush, paints, pencil, sharp craft knife
With pencil, draw simple shapes on stencil paper. Cut out shapes with knife. Place stencil on drawing paper, and dab paint into cut-out areas using stencil brush. Be sure paint is not runny.
Candle painting
You will need: drawing paper, candle, knife, pencil, paints, large paintbrush
Lightly draw a design on paper. Use the knife to shave the candle until it has a sharp point. Pressing hard, trace over your pencil line with the candle. With thin paint, lightly paint all over the paper once. Use one color, or try different colors in different areas.
3. Fabric fun
Painted T-shirt
You will need: T-shirt; permanent fabric paint–regular, glitter, or puffy (available in fabric stores)
Have friends autograph your T-shirt with fabric paint. Or draw a design or write a message on it. Let T-shirt dry according to fabric paint directions.
