How could you apply these proverbs as you communicate with others?

_______________________________________________________________

Practice communicating.
Choose one situation from each of the categories below, or make up your own situations. With a friend, act out how you would handle the situation. Then talk over your response with an adult. Circle the situations you acted out.

  • Using the telephone
Late at night, someone calls for your parents, but you’re the only one at home.
During a storm, a power line goes down in front of the house where you’re baby-sitting.
Your younger brother falls and hurts himself, but your parents are not at home.
Someone calls and immediately asks what number he’s reached and what your name is.

  • Meeting others
At a family reunion dinner, you’re seated with an adult cousin you never met before.
A new adult neighbor comes to visit, and you two are left to talk together while your mom takes a phone call.
You want to meet the new kid across the street who acts very shy whenever you go out your door.
While at a crowded restaurant, you spot your best friend–whom you want to invite to a game that day–sitting with relatives you never met before.

  • Reaching out to exceptional people
A hearing-impaired classmate wants to join your intramural team after school, but is worried about understanding instructions.
A new student sits in a wheelchair at the back of the room and seems not to know anyone in the class.
An elderly person with a cane stands hesitating on the curb of a busy intersection through several signal changes.

  • Supporting your friends
Your best friend didn’t make the team, but you did.
The parents of a friend of yours are getting divorced.
Because of unemployment, a neighborhood family has no money for new clothes or toys.
The father of a friend of yours just died.

    2. Communicate without words. (choose two)
    Communicate using signs without words.
Think of signs without words such as those found on roadways, public buildings, airports, and schools. Draw at least five of those signs here. Below them, write what they mean.

Use a combination of at least two signs to make an information message for non-English-speaking tourists or visitors to your church. Write what it means below it.

    My message:

Communicate feelings without saying a word.
Imagine that your mother or father said, “We’re going to visit your cousins on Saturday.” Silently act out at least four different reactions to this announcement using “body language.” Let others guess what feelings you are showing.

    Feelings I acted out:

    _______________________________________________________________

Make a sign of your own.
Use symbols to make a sign without words to hang in your room.
