1. Make snacks.
Make two snacks. Use the recipes below, or use your own.
Crispy Bars
You will need: 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 cup butter or margarine, 1/4 cup peanut butter (optional), 2 cups miniature marshmallows, 2 cups crisp rice cereal, 1/4 cup wheat germ, 1 cup chopped peanuts or raisins
In a large saucepan, cook and stir honey, butter, peanut butter, and marshmallows until melted. Remove from heat; add remaining ingredients. Press into a greased 9-inch (23 cm) square pan; cook until firm. Cut into bars.
Frozen chocolate-covered bananas
You will need: bananas, chocolate chips, vegetable oil, wooden skewers or popsicle sticks; optional: chopped nuts, granola, coconut
Peel bananas, and cut them in half crosswise. Put a wooden skewer or stick in each banana half. Place bananas on cookie sheets, and freeze. Melt chocolate chips over very low heat or in a microwave oven. Add a very small amount of oil and stir until smooth. Pour melted chocolate into a narrow glass or jar. Dip frozen bananas in chocolate to coat them. Immediately roll coated bananas in finely chopped nuts, granola, or shredded coconut. Place bananas on cookie sheets and freeze until coating is set.
Flavored popcorn
You will need: popcorn and choice of toppings: finely grated cheese, dry taco mix, melted butter flavored with garlic salt
Pop popcorn, and add topping of your choice while popcorn is still hot.
Granola Bars
You will need: 1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup flour (whole wheat, white or a combination of both), ½ teaspoon salt, 1 cup coconut, 1 cup chopped dates or apples, ½ cup chopped nuts, ½ cup butter or margarine, ½ cup honey, 1 teaspoon baking soda
Mix first six ingredients. Melt butter with honey; add baking soda; stir into dry ingredients. Press into greased 9-inch (23 cm) square pan. Bake at 350º F (175º C) for just 10 minutes.

2. Create sandwiches.
Create a special sandwich to share. Use one of the following recipes or create your own. Make enough to share with your friends.
Pizza-style Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
bread slices
mozzarella cheese slices
| sliced pepperoni
soft butter or margarine

Place mozzarella cheese on bread. Top cheese with pepperoni slices and another piece of bread to make a sandwich. Spread softened butter or margarine on the outside of bread slices. Place sandwich on hot griddle or skillet. Turn sandwich over when bottom is brown, and toast other side.

Tuna Burgers
1 can (6½ ounce) tuna, drained
¼ cup mayonnaise
| 2 tablespoons chopped onions
2 tablespoons chopped sweet pickle
|
Mix together all ingredients to make filling. Split and toast five hamburger buns. Butter bottom halves, and spread with tuna mixture. Top each with a slice of cheese. Broil 5 inches (12 cm) from heat for four minutes or until cheese melts. Add bun. top.

Stuffed Pocket Sandwich
2 pita breads
1 small tomato (optional)
1 stalk celery
½ small cucumber
1 small carrot
½ teaspoon mustard
squeeze of fresh lemon
| several lettuce and spinach leaves
½ avocado (optional)
2 cups alfalfa sprouts (optional)
½ cup shredded cheese (optional)
1-2 tablespoons mayonnaise
salt or seasoned salt (optional)

Finely chop lettuce, spinach, tomato, celery and cucumber; combine. Grate carrot, cube avocado, and add to vegetables. Mix in remaining ingredients. Warm pitas briefly in oven or microwave. Cut off a thin strip along the top of pitas and stuff with filling.

Cheesy Buttons (3 dozen appetizers)
1 cup biscuit baking mix
¼ cup butter or margarine, softened
¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
| 3 tablespoons boiling water
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
|
Heat oven to 450º F (230º C). Mix baking mix and butter. Stir in water and sesame seeds until dough forms a ball. Drop by scant teaspoonfuls into cheese to coat. Place about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden, about 7 to 10 minutes. Serve warm.

Italian Meat Sauce
1 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 6-ounce can tomato paste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 bay leaf
2 cups water
| 1 pound ground beef
1 1-pound, 14-ounce can tomatoes, cut up
¼ cup snipped parsley
1 teaspoon salt
1 ½ dried oregano, crushed
¼ teaspoon dried thyme, crushed

Place onion, meat, and garlic in Dutch oven; cook until meat is brown and onion is tender. Skim off fat; add remaining ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, 3 hours or until sauce is thick; stir occasionally. Remove bay leaf. Serve over hot spaghetti. Pass grated Parmesan cheese. Makes 6 servings.

Microwave Green Beans
Wash and snap ends off 1 pound fresh green beans. Place in a 6-cup microwave-safe casserole. Add enough water to almost cover beans. Microwave, covered at High (100 percent) for 8 minutes, stirring after 4 minutes. Drain liquid; season to taste with butter, salt, and pepper.

Marinated Carrots
1 cup canned tomato soup
¼ cup water
¾ cup sugar
1 green pepper, chopped
| 2 pounds carrots, sliced and cooked
½ cup vegetable oil
1 onion, thinly sliced

Simmer all ingredients except carrots until onion is tender-crisp. Mix with cooked carrots. Marinate overnight. Serve hot or cold. Makes 8 servings.

Strawberry Yogurt Pie
2 8-ounce containers of strawberry yogurt
1 large container of whipped topping
1 graham cracker pie crust
Mix yogurt and topping together; put in pie crust. Freeze. Remove from freezer about 30 minutes before serving.
