OLYMPICS
1. Organize the olympics. (do both)
Prepare for the olympics.
You will need: markers, posterboard, scissors, colored ribbon, glue, pins, several colors of construction paper, decals (optional)
Set a date, time, and place for the olympics. Arrange for judges and scorekeepers.
Make labels for teams by cutting squares out of different colors of construction paper. Or use stick-on decals of different colors. Players can wear the labels to show which team they’re on.
Make certificates of participation for everyone. Or cut circles out of construction paper and fasten them to colored ribbons. Participants can write the names of the events in which their team excelled or events they really liked on the certificates or paper circles.
After you have chosen the games, make a sign for each event and gather equipment needed.
Choose olympic events.
Choose at least six of the olympic events listed. Think up additional events on your own.
Beginning events
Olympic Torch Relay
You will need: for each team: candles, candleholders (may be of different heights and shapes); matches, table, boxes or chairs, masking tape or chalk to mark a path
Mark a path around obstacles (boxes or chairs), ending at a table with candleholders. Post each team member at a different station along the path. Provide matches at each station. The first team member walks through the course with a lighted candle and passes it to the next team member, and so on. If the candle goes out, the person must walk back to the last station and relight it. As they finish, team members place their candle into the candleholder of their choice.
Exchange Students
You will need: masking tape, stopwatch
Mark two parallel lines on the floor about half a yard or meter apart for each team. Teams line up inside the lines and number off. At a signal, team members (except for the middle person) must reverse their number order, with the first and last persons switching places and so on. If team members step out of the lines, a judge penalizes that team three seconds. Practice once, and then try to set a “world record.” Games may be repeated to beat the record.
Coin Flip Signal
You will need: coins (one for each team), spoons (one for every two teams)
Teams line up side by side facing each other. Teammates hold hands. On one end, place one spoon on the floor next to a judge. On the opposite end, the first member of each team flips a coin next to a judge. If the coin is heads, team members pass the signal down the line by squeezing each other’s hand in sequence. (No talking allowed!) A false signal results in a new coin flip. When the last person’s hand is squeezed, that person grabs the spoon, runs around the judge, replaces the spoon, and runs to the head of the line to become the coin flipper. The game continues until all members of one team have been coin flippers and spoon grabbers.
Telegraph Relay
You will need: paper and pencils, messages printed on paper and cut into separate words
Team members line up, one behind the other. The last person in line is shown the first word and “writes” it with a finger on the back of the next person, who does the same thing to the next person. The first person in line writes the word on the paper, runs to the end of the line, and passes the next word on. The games ends when a team successfully transmits the entire message. Game may be repeated with different messages.
Track events
Amoeba Race
You will need: long, strong ropes
Divide into teams of any size, or play with one large group against the clock. Teams bunch together as closely as possible, holding their arms up, and are tied together with the rope. At a signal, teams race to a goal and back.
Backwards Race
Team members line up together at the starting line and walk backwards to the finish line, keeping an eye on each other, because they must cross the finish line at the same time. Game may be played one team at a time against the clock.
Long, Long, Long Jump
You will need: measuring tape
Each team member tries to jump as far as possible. The next team member begins jumping where the previous one landed. When all have jumped, measure the total distance. Jumps may be made on one leg or two, from a standing or running start. Event may be repeated to break the record.
“Electric” High Jump
You will need: two poles, rope or string, mat or mattress (optional)
Divide into teams as evenly as possible according to height and weight. Tie rope between the two poles a short distance from the floor, with a mat to one side. Teams try to get all team members over the rope without touching it (getting electrocuted). Team members may help each other over the rope in any way they want, but once team members are over, they may not come back to help. The last team member must get over without any help. Keep raising the height of the rope until only one team can get over it successfully.
Team sports
Feetball
You will need: soccer balls, chairs
Teams sit on chairs facing each other, just far enough apart that their feet barely touch when they stretch out their legs. No shoes may be worn. Team members must keep their arms behind the chairs. Drop the ball in the middle of the two teams to start. Using only their feet, teams try to move the ball to their right toward their goal at the end of the line.
Paper Shoot
You will need: clean garbage cans, newspapers, chalk
Mark a large circle around a garbage can (about three yards or meters away). One team rolls up paper batons from newspaper and lies down on their backs with their heads toward the can. The opposing team stands behind the line and throws wadded up newspaper balls into the can. (Or they may sit on chairs.) The defending team tries to knock the balls away. After two minutes, teams switch positions, using another garbage can. Compare number of balls in each team’s garbage can.
Ping-Pong Hockey
You will need: Ping-Pong balls
Teams get down on all fours. Place a Ping-Pong ball in the center. Players must blow the ball through their goals (a doorway or the legs of a chair) without touching the ball. Players who touch the ball go to a penalty box for thirty seconds. No goalies are used. For more action, use two balls at once.
World Record Volley
You will need: volleyballs and nets
Arrange teams on either side of the net. After the ball is served, both teams try to keep it going back and forth across the net. The ball may not be touched twice in a row by the same player. Each team may have only four hits before the ball must go over the net. Count the number of times the ball is tapped before it falls to the floor. When it does, start a new game and try to beat the previous score. Record the best score.
2. Participate in the olympics.
Divide into different teams for each event. Provide construction paper squares or decals to distinguish the teams, if necessary.
Record winning times. At the end of the olympics, announce these plus any unusual happenings during the games. Award all participants certificates or ribbons. Clean up afterwards, and return any borrowed materials.

3. Remember the source of strength.
Read Isaiah 40:30-31. What does God want us to do before he will renew our strength?
_________________________________________________
List some times when your strength needs to be renewed.

Ask God to help you at these times.
