PET SITTER
1. Prepare for pet care. (choose two)
Practice pet care skills.
Learn and practice at least four of the following skills. Choose ones you don’t know yet. Have an adult supervise.
Feed the pet.
Groom the pet.
Clean up after the pet (clean cage, clean litter box, etc.).
Play with the pet.
Give the pet medicine.
Exercise the pet.

Think through pet-care situations.
Act out (or write or sketch) what you would do in four of these situations. Discuss them with an adult.
The pet won’t eat.
The pet has an “accident” in the house.
The pet gets loose.
The pet gets lost.
The pet looks sick.
The pet gets hurt.
The pet eats or drinks something it shouldn’t have.
The pet gets hard to control.
Make a pet-care checklist.
You may be caring for a pet when the owners aren’t nearby–feeding fish while the owners are on vacation, walking a dog, and so on. Think through all the instructions and phone numbers you would need. Make a list of them. Get your list approved by an adult, and use it when you go pet-sitting. Ideas:
owner’s phone number
vet’s phone number
neighbor’s phone number
feeding instructions
medication instructions
2. Prepare to take responsibility. (do both)
Home Responsibility
| Discuss with your club or family ways to be responsible in pet owners’ homes when they are away. Create a flyer or list that you can give to pet owners to advertise that you are responsible. Ideas:
| | locking up after yourself
| | cleaning up after the pet
| | putting pet supplies away neatly
| | not snooping
| | not helping yourself to things in the refrigerator
| | respecting the pet owners’ property

Community Responsibility
If you will be outdoors with a pet, find out your community’s laws concerning that type of animal. For instance, do dogs or cats need to be on leashes? Where are you allowed to walk the animal? Do you need to clean up after it?
3. Take care of someone’s pet.
Take care of a friend’s or neighbor’s pet for at least a day. An adult can supervise, but you give all the care.
4. Check out God’s care.
Read Psalm 104:10-12, 24-28. What difference could these verses make in how you treat an animal in your care? Why?
