Think through child-care situations.
Act out or write out what you would do in five of the following situations. Discuss the situations with an adult.

  • A repairman comes to fix an appliance.
  • A child falls and twists an ankle.
  • A toddler throws a temper tantrum.
  • A telephone caller asks who you are and if you’re alone.
  • A baby falls and gets a cut lip.
  • A friend wants to come over and visit you.
  • A fire breaks out in the kitchen.
  • A baby swallows something harmful.
  • The telephone rings while you’re giving a child a bath.
  • A child develops a high fever.

    Make a child-care checklist.
On a child-care checklist, include information such as place and telephone number where parents will be, when they will return, emergency telephone numbers (neighbor, relative, police, ambulance, fire department, doctor, poison control center), and child-care instructions. Show your checklist to an adult, and use it when you take care of children.
