Looking at the Bigger Picture

The Search Institute®, a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy children and youth, has identified 40 Developmental Assets®: positive experiences and personal qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring, and responsible.

Looking at their list in light of what happens in club each week, I was pleased to find Pioneer Clubs addressing many of these essential assets. Take for instance, the importance for young people to perceive that the adults in the community value them. Your time and commitment each week at Pioneer Clubs speaks volumes to a child. You're there. You listen. You care. You work on activities side-by-side and learn about God's Word together.

Your actions as a Pioneer Clubs coordinator, leader or volunteer are concrete steps toward changing the Search Institute's study results that say 97 percent of youth felt that adults viewed them negatively.

This coming week, when you prepare for a Bible Exploration lesson, or gather the supplies for making candles or chocolate-covered pretzels, or explain how to play this week's game, or learn about first aid, pause for a moment to see the big picture. As you begin your Pioneer Clubs season this fall, may our gracious Lord use you to encourage, affirm, and nurture the club members he brings to your church.

Blessings!

Just for Coordinators:
October To Do

October can be a busy month with activities and special events. Club leaders and members should be getting to know one another and falling into a regular routine. As a coordinator, your job is to oversee the program, plan the calendar year, recruit leaders, and then support those leaders with supervision, training, encouragement and the proper tools and resources they need to run a successful program. Below are several items to keep on your radar during this month:
  • If you're running a Pal program, recruit Pals and assign them to club members. The Pioneer Clubs Pal program matches club members with adults in...

What's Up at Pioneer Clubs?

Central Baptist Church Camp

Club members from Central Baptist Church in Kitchener, Ontario, enjoyed a full week of action-packed, fun-filled activities, according to Club Coordinator Moni Nickel. Club members attended a summer camp and enjoyed roasting marshmallows. A hike to the Georgian Bay along the Bruce Trail allowed all campers to earn the Hiking Activity Award. Playing in the sand and sun was a great way to make new friends at camp.

It Worked at Our Club

You, too, can use this memorable way to show club members' accomplishments during the year, created by a Trailblazer leader at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Warrenville, Illinois.

Start with an inexpensive 8 ˝" x 11" plastic picture frame. Using a word-processing program, create a template that includes the child's name, the club year, and the Pioneer Clubs logo (available in the Clip Art section of the Leader Resource Center at www.pioneerclubs.org). Add a picture of the club member.  Print on vellum card stock. Next, attach the crest and all activity awards and Bible awards as shown. Club members appreciate getting a ready-to-hang memory of their club year.

If you have ideas worth sharing with other leaders and coordinators, please send them to Louise Ferrebee at lferrebee@pioneerclubs.org.

Pumpkin Push

Divide players into teams of equal numbers. Give a pumpkin to each team. Divide each team into two subteams that line up facing each other behind opposite goal lines. At the signal, the first person on each team gets on hands and knees and pushes the pumpkin to the first teammate at the opposite goal line-using only his or her head. The teammate then uses the...
