January 2005

Dear !*Address1*!,

Please pray with us as we pray for the victims of the tsunami and the awful devastation that occurred recently in Asia. Pray for comfort for those who have lost loved ones and entire families. Pray for the international relief efforts and that Jesus’ healing touch and presence will be felt.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Pioneer Clubs eNewsletter, where we provide resources to help you build your Pioneer Clubs ministry.

This month we would like to bring you ideas on developing your club members' self-respect and confidence. These qualities, in turn, help lay the foundation for them to show respect and care for others.

"By presenting biblical values and characteristics of persons made in God's image, club assists children in developing positive attitudes toward God, themselves, and others."
—Pioneer Clubs' Goal 3a

7 Ways to Affirm Kids

1. Treat kids well. Every day, by their behavior (both positive and negative), kids ask adults, "Do you care?" "Are you interested in me?" "Do you like having me around?" How you respond to club members can send the message "You're okay with me! I like having you in club." You can play a part in helping them feel worthwhile to you and to God.

Here's an idea of how adults' behavior can have a part in influencing kids' feelings.

Adult's Behavior      >>affects>> Child's Feelings
  • shows love/acceptance
    mostly when kids please adult
  • doesn't feel truly cared about
  • insecure
  • low self-image
  • shows love/acceptance
mostly when kids live up to adult’s requirements and expectations
  • feels incompetent
  • insecure
  • anxious
  • low self-image
  • works on showing unconditional love/acceptance
  • feels good about him- or herself
  • comfortable with him- or herself

2. Check out the 40 Assets. Search Institute is an organization that has developed a list of 40 "developmental assets" --positive experiences and qualities that kids need to experience to grow up in a healthy way. You can learn about the assets at www.search-institute.org.

3. Emphasize traits presented in school. Many public and private schools, home schools, and even families work on "character education" or "character building" activities. Find out what character traits (responsibility, honesty, etc.) kids are currently learning about.

4. Notice club members. It may sound obvious, but it's encouraging to be noticed. As you affirm the kids and simply pay attention to them as people, they will tend to follow your example and begin affirming each other.

5. Listen. Getting down on a child's level (literally and/or figuratively) and really listening conveys several positive messages:

Being listened to by significant adults will also help your club members conclude that they can talk to God and be listened to.

Check Leader Training Outlines (catalog #2754) for a training session on listening to children, which includes a self-test of your listening skills.

6. Ask for help. Letting club members know you need and appreciate their help can give them quite a boost—and help them feel good about helping others. Don't expect perfection, and be sure to say "thanks."

7. Use Bible Explorations that meet goal 3a (above). Each club age level has at least one plan book unit designed to help children understand how wonderfully God created them and how much he values them. Look through the table of contents in your leader plan book to find one to use. Examples:

Camp Curriculum
January is a great time to start reviewing curriculum for summer camp. Did you know that Pioneer Clubs® Camp Cherith provides Bible-based, interactive, and easy-to-use Bible study curriculum with corresponding devotional books for grades 2-4, grades 5-7, and teens?
Read what others say about Pioneer Clubs camp curriculum:

"We have used Pioneer Clubs Camp Cherith® curriculum for twenty years. Our counselors find the materials easy to use, and they appreciate the clearly organized format. Many of our campers say that Bible Exploration is one of the most important parts of their day at camp!" Paula Worden, director

"The curriculum has plenty of options to choose from. The kids love the opening activities. And these activities set the stage for the Bible study, getting the kids involved and interested." Maria Hoak, counselor

"There are a variety of activities to supplement the main lesson, and this keeps the campers interested in the lesson, even if they all have different interests and personality types." Leah Yerpe, counselor

Changed Lives
"Our club program has doubled in just one month. The children have been having so much fun with the lessons and activity awards that they are bringing their friends. Some travel over 30 minutes to attend. Just recently the Scooter Club was working on a project that included a nativity set. For several Scooters, it was the first time they had ever seen a Nativity scene. What an example of God's timing reaching the needs even of 4- and 5-year-olds. This was the first Christmas that these Scooters knew the true reason we celebrate. Although this took some leaders by surprise, they realized just how important it is to reach unchurched families." --Kristen Seitz, Davisburg United Methodist Church, Davisburg, Michigan

Today’s Kids...
. . .tend to fear criticism and ridicule. They need encouragement and support. Look for ways to compliment each kid's work during Award Activity times. During Bible Explorations, help kids understand that God loves them, is dependable, and can be trusted.

Reflections
"We love because he first loved us." –1 John 4:19

Lighter Side
During a recent Pioneer Clubs meeting, the children each read part of the Scripture passage aloud from their own Bibles. One little girl seemed to be having trouble following along. When it was her turn to read, she mentioned that her Bible was different, explaining, "My grandmother gave it to me, and she's from Iowa." –from a club leader
