Leader Tools—Special Events

Decorations
Draw a detective on posterboard welcoming club members and Pals* to a party of riddles, games and mysteries. Hang it on the door. Before the event, take pictures of club members disguised in unusual clothes or circumstances. Number and post pictures.

Activities
    • Who's Who.
Give each Pal-club member pair a sheet of paper with numbers corresponding to the posted pictures. Pairs write in their guesses of who’s who.

    • Guesstimation.
Pal-club member pairs guess how many pieces of candy are in a jar. The winner may pass the candy and take home what is left.

    • Name Tthat Nose.
Hang up a sheet, and cut out small circles at nose level, one for each leader. Leaders stand behind the sheet with only their noses showing. Club members guess whose nose is whose.

    • Surprise Taste Relay.
Club members line up in teams. One Pal for each team stands at the goal, holding a paper bag so that club members cannot see what is inside. In the bag are small edible items (licorice, cookie, carrot, piece of dried fruit, etc.). Club members in turn run to the goal, close their eyes, pull something out of the bag, and eat it with their eyes closed. Players must correctly identify the food before running back to tag the next player.

    • Fingerprinting.
On a sheet of paper, draw a box for each finger and label it. Make a copy for each club member. Pals help fingerprint club members by rolling the tops of fingers (one at a time) on ink pad and then on paper.
Provide magnifying glasses and information about classification of fingerprints (check the internet or encyclopedia) so club members can figure out what type they have.

    • Scissors.
All sit in a circle. The leader passes a pair of scissors to the next person while saying, “Pass the scissors like this.” The rest try to figure out what is special about the way the scissors are passed. As each person passes the scissors to the next person, the leader says if it is done correctly.
What matters is not only how the scissors are passed, but also the position of the feet of the person passing them.  If feet are crossed, scissors must be passed closed. If feet are not crossed, scissors must be passed open.  Those in the circle do not say out loud what the pattern is when they catch on.

    • Bible Riddles.
Find names of well-known Bible character pairs (Adam and Eve, Paul and Silas, Mary and Martha, etc.). Write names on separate slips of paper, and tape one on each person’s back. Asking only yes and no questions, club members and Pals must discover who their character is and find their partner.

Refreshments
Serve cupcakes with a jelly bean baked inside each. Serve “mystery punch”—a combination of juices or soft drinks.

*Pioneer Clubs Pals are adults in the church who are matched with club members for prayer. For information on beginning a Pal program, see Making Your Pal Program Work.
