This spring, your club can have fun, help other kids have Pioneer Clubs, and do something good for your community all at the same time.
By incorporating a community service project into your Hike for Kids, you can achieve “three goals with one hike.” Your service project will help remind kids how important it is to give back to the community and to those less well-off.
Some simple suggestions include:
- Bring along bags for collecting debris along the trail. You can keep the trash separated in different bags and deliver them to a recycling center.
- When hiking through neighborhoods, stop at homes and collect items to deliver to a food pantry. Or collect used children’s books that can be donated to the children’s ward at a hospital.
- Hike to a nursing home and have an afternoon “tea party” with cookies and juice. Hikers can perform songs for the residents.
- Invite kids from the community to participate in the hike. Let them see what a great time they can have at Pioneer Clubs. Follow up with invitations to attend club.
- Hike to the home of an elderly or physically impaired person who needs odd jobs done. Hikers can do yard work or small chores, and parents and older siblings can help with larger projects. Invite hikers, their families, and the people who were helped back to the church for refreshments afterward.
- Incorporate “caroling” into your hike. Include the homes of elderly people and shut-ins on your hike route and sing songs for them.
- Collect prayer requests from friends, family, and congregation members. During your hike, stop at various places along the way to enjoy nature and pray for a request.
